We sized every Imaginext DC Super Friends figure at about three inches so a preschool hand can close around Batman, bend his knees into the Batcycle seat and still reach the launcher button. That one decision is why this Fisher-Price toy line works for a three-year-old and keeps working at eight: the action figures swap between every Imaginext vehicle and playset we have made since the first Batcave, so the collection only grows.
Most sets pair a hero with a rival — Batman with The Joker, Superman with Metallo, Batgirl with a lair to defend — because a story needs someone to chase. Launchers fire soft discs or projectiles, robots light up and talk, and the bigger playsets open into a whole city block with a jail cell that actually springs open.
If you are starting from zero, pick one Imaginext vehicle toy and one figure multipack: the vehicle gives the first mission, the multipack gives the villains to catch. The Batbot robots come later, when the crew needs a headquarters that stands two feet tall and the adventure needs a base.
Fisher-Price has kept the Imaginext DC Super Friends toy collections going for more than a decade, so older action figures, new Metal Force sets and this year's toy action figures packs all play together. Kids mix heroes and villains from different collections in one adventure, and every toy here is built for the floor, the bath and the backyard.
Field notes: Imaginext figure sizes, from 3 inches to robot
Our DC Super Friends figure packs are the cheapest way into Gotham: two to ten Imaginext action figures in one box, each with a weapon or accessory. Pair Batman with The Riddler, add the Villains of Gotham City six-pack, and a kid has a full rogues' gallery for every Imaginext toy vehicle and playset in the house.
Batmobiles, Batcopters, the Batsub, the Bat-Tank and the new DC Metal Force cars all seat a 3-inch Imaginext figure and fire discs or projectiles. Launcher sets add racing: slam the power pad and Batman, Superman or The Joker shoots across the floor, and the pods link for a three-lane chase.
The Bat-Tech Batbot, RC Transforming Batbot, Batman Flight Mech and Superman Exo Suit are robot toys with a cockpit for a small figure, plus lights, sounds and launchers. XL action figures of Batman, Superman, The Joker and The Flash stand 9 to 10 inches tall — Fisher-Price built them for the youngest kids who want a big hero to hold.
Gotham City Jail, the Robo Command Center, the Batgirl Hero Hideout and the Catwoman Playhouse are the bases where the action happens. Advent calendars and the Batman 85th Anniversary set round out the collection for kids and grown-up fans of the DC Super Friends adventure.
Yes. The 3-inch figures share one size and joint layout, so Batman from a 2014 set rides in this year's Batmobile and the XL robots carry the same figures inside their cockpits.
We design them for kids 3 to 8. Launchers fire soft projectiles, and small parts are sized for preschool play with a grown-up nearby for the youngest crew.
The robot playsets — Bat-Tech Batbot and the RC Transforming Batbot — combine a vehicle, a base and a robot, with lights and sounds. For a smaller start, a figure-and-vehicle pack gives a full chase for far less.
